Bill Murray was born and raised in Wilmette, Illinois, a northern suburb of Chicago. He is the fifth of nine children. His mother Lucille was a mail clerk. His father Edward Joseph Murray was a lumber salesman. He was raised Irish Catholic along with his siblings. Three of his brothers are fellow actors: Joel Murray, John Murray, and Brian Doyle-Murray. One of his sisters is an Adrian Dominican sister in Michigan. She travels around the country portraying St. Catherine of Siena.
As a boy, Murray has said that he spent his time reading the child-adapted biographies of American heroes like Kit Carson, Wild Bill Hickok and Davy Crockett. He was in the Boy Scouts until he was kicked out. He played little league until he was kicked out. His family was poor for his entire childhood. As such, Bill and his siblings received constant pressure to work and help support the family. As a teenager, and in a bizarre foretelling of his future role in Caddyshack, Bill worked as a caddy at the country club in Evanston, Illinois to help pay for his education in a Jesuit high school.
All through the 1960s the Murray household experienced hardship after hardship. Murray’s father was diabetic, one of his sisters contracted polio, and his mother had numerous miscarriages. He went on a pre-med track in college, attending Regis University in Denver, Colorado. Murray ended his studies after he was arrested at Chicago’s O’Hare airport for possession of marijuana.
This apparent bad fortune would create an opportunity that would change the landscape of comedy forever. Bill Murray went to perform with the Second City Chicago improv group after receiving an invitation to participate from his older brother Brian. He was a huge success and helped to build Second City’s reputation as a stepping-stone for comedy legends. When he was recruited by John Belushi to work in the National Lampoon Radio Hour along with Dan Aykroyd and Gilda Radner that he left Chicago for New York City in 1974. The rest, as they say, is history.
