Walt Disney
Walt Disney

What is the significance of Walt Disney?
What impact did Walt Disney have on the United States? What things did Walt Disney do that made him a significant figure in the U.S?
Disney was a great innovator in entertainment. His company practically invented animation, in the way it was done before computers. They had hundreds of patents for animation processes, and if you look at their stuff from the 30s to the 70s, it really was the best, most expensive animation being done. And when computer animation became possible, they got into that too. They made a string of animated features that are really timeless, and I think they made them that way on purpose. Will still be watching them 100 years from now. How many movies, especially family movies, can you say that about?
Disney also invented the modern ‘theme park’. This was Walt’s idea. He’d taken his kids to amusement parks where the kids ride on the rides and the parents sit on a park bench and watch them. He wanted to build a park that would be for the whole family, with rides that adults would enjoy too. All the theme parks that exist today are this type of thing, not just a big parking lot with rides but a full experience for the whole family.
He also had an extremely popular TV show on Sunday nights that ran for about 100 years. In the 50s and 60s, this is what people DID on Sunday nights. It was one of the first shows in color. Of course he used the TV show to promote the movie and the theme parks. 8^)
After Walt died, the company went in new directions, becoming a world-wide media cartel. That wasn’t Walt’s idea, and I don’t think he’d approve. For instance, Walt got a very good deal on a huge piece of land near Orlando, Florida, to build Disney World and Epcot Center. His idea was that it would be a fun theme park, also an education experience, and that all the land around it would remain natural and be preserved, and that was part of the deal when he bought the land, part of the reason he got it so cheap. After Walt died, the entire area was built up with more tourist attractions, hotels and restaurants. It was a good business decision, it made the company a lot of money, but it wasn’t Walt’s original vision.
