Do drinkers now drink less “traditional” mixed drinks like martinis and “tom collins”?

And instead drink more just whatever liquor plus some sort of soft drink as the mix? I would think this is true.

Generally, I think you are probably right. I know several people who prefer one of the traditional mixed drinks, but most people drink it straight or with a mixer like Coke.

My husband is very fond of Rob Roys, and has those from time to time, but he usually orders a beer (we have a lot of microbreweries here, and there is some really glorious local beer on tap in restaurants), or a Rum and Coke. I know one person who prefers a Martini, and another who prefers a Gibson, but other than that most people, myself included, drink shots or something with a soft drink mixer. Also, I know a lot of people who are really interested in wine, and trying to learn about good wines, so I know quite a few wine drinkers.

One of my best friends was a bartender for about four years. He did not attend bartending school first, he just learned on the fly. He had a bar book with a ton of recipes, and in the entire time he tended bar, he said he literally made just a handful of the traditional drinks.

I think people try to be fashionable, as well. I actually prefer a Cuba Libre, which is a Rum and Coke with lime, and no one, when I order one, knows how to make it. They do offer me Mojitos, though. I tell them that if I liked mint, I’d ask for mint, and they have no clue what I am talking about. But it’s a really popular drink right now–I think some people think of alcohol as an accessory–it should be something you enjoy. I know people who drink Appletinis (apple martinis) because they think it’s “cool” to order them, or “sophisticated.” That cracks me up. Ordering something you don’t like to drink and paying $7 for it isn’t sophisticated–it’s stupid.
