Men Comics

What is a good starting point for reading x-men comics?
I have read the odd x-men comic and am interested in going back a little further and reading in order. I have heard it gets pretty messy in the 90′s with spin-offs and overlapping and conflicting stories.
I quite liked the x-men line up as they were in the animate TV series. And also, I’m a but picky about the quality of graphics so I’m not sure going back to 1963 will work for me…
Thanks
I started reading with Claremont in the mid-80′s, about 220, 221. I stopped around Jim Lee, though I liked the art, the stories and characters weren’t nearly as interesting.
