Super Comics

The first true comic book hero burst onto the scene in 1938 and captured the interest of the public with his tremendous powers and noble personality. People have been in love with comics ever since. While comics had been around before his arrival, Superman was the character to launch comics into the eyes of popular culture. It didn’t take long for people to take notice of this phenomenon and fans of all ages were starting to draw their own super heroes.

It’s not that the art in comics is exceptional; in some instances the drawings seem very basic. To be honest that’s one of the big attractions to learning how to draw super heroes. There is a captivating charm and interest to the characters in comics, which gives the impression they were easy to create. Looking at other forms of more traditional art, the pictures definitely are more simple, but templates and proportions still need to be studied to create the fundamental shapes.

A good starting point from here is to revisit the basics. By studying simple guides, you can quickly get realistic shapes onto paper, and after that it’s just a matter of getting a bit creative. The skeletal structure of a super hero and their bodies will generally operate in the same way as you or I. The differences are in the subtleties of their shape. They are generally well built, whether they’re good or bad. Heroes tend to be exceptionally attractive, the women have accentuated curves and the men have strong jaw lines. More deformed looks or monster-like appearances are reserved for villains. However, sometimes they look very similar to a hero, but with a slightly oversized head, or more aggressive features.

It can sometimes be helpful to look at a normal person and simply enhance their muscle mass to create a more athletic frame. In many ways a super hero is like the before and after transformation you see to advertise exercise programs. Their bodies are defined and muscular to impractical proportions. It’s that extreme exaggeration which gives the figures their super physique. It really comes down to increasing the muscles of the body. So get the fundamental shape and positioning in place and then make the necessary enhancement from there.

Body building magazines can be useful, as they show what an overly developed body will look like. Some body parts will always remain slender, joints, wrists, lower calf muscles and hips for example. And other groups will be considerably larger, like the biceps, chest, back, shoulders and legs. When you’re looking at how to draw super heroes, the body is where it’s at. There are some slight exaggerations on the faces, but you’ll usually have normal, attractive features. Like everything it takes a little practice to get everything looking right, but once you put the time in, you’ll find the characters surprisingly simple to put together.

I am planning to go to Tokyo for Super Comic City 19 May 2nd and 3rd. I read online that you have to purchase the catalogue for the event in advance, but have found no information on where or how to do that. Does anyone know?

Nirvana made a lot of things irrelevant when Nevermind was released in 1991. Among the most unfortunate casualties caught inside the blast radius were the B-52′s. Just two years prior, they had released their very first mainstream breakthrough album, Cosmic Thing. This album was featherweight, sun-kissed, playfully pansexual and, most importantly, danceable. Tracks like “Love Shack” and “Roam” rem…
