Tips for two first-time travellers to Australia..?
I plan to go travelling with my boyfriend in Australia for around 6-8 weeks in December 2011 – February 2012. I am in the very early stages of planning and would like some advice on the following; Transport, Prices, Weather, Costs etc. I have made a note of some of the places I would love to visit; Ayers Rock / Uluru, Sydney Opera House, Whitsunday Islands, Steve Irwins Australia Zoo, Airlie Beach, Alice Springs, Byron Bay, Cairns, Hervey Island (Fraser Island), Ningaloo Reef, Kings Canyon, Monkey Mia, Victoria (Melbourne). If anyone could give me any advice on the best routes and any other useful information, I would be extremely grateful!
I would look at a map of Australia and compare distances with your own country. Australia is bigger than the USA (without Alaska) and much bigger than Europe. You can’t see everything in a few weeks.
Firstly you need to group your destinations. Uluru, Alice Springs, Kings Canyon would all be done on one trip. Monkey Mia and Ningaloo Reef are both in Western Australia but are about 600km apart and Monkey Mia is the same distance north of Perth. Melbourne is worth a week on its own as is Sydney. The Whitsundays and Airlie Beach are well south of Cairns but well north of Brisbane. Byron Bay is in northern NSW and Steve Irwin’s rip-off is in Brisbane. (There are much better zoos in Australia starting with Taronga Zoo in Sydney).
Quite honestly, in six to eight weeks, I would forget Western Australia if you want to see all those other places. Start in Melbourne and hire a car. Drive up the east coast to Cairns, it is about 3500km so it will take you a while. When in Sydney, take a flight to Alice Springs and see the red centre, then drive north through NSW and Queensland.
You could do it flying between centres and hiring a car to look at the places you want to see when you get there. You could do Byron Bay and Fraser Island from Brisbane for instance.
Check a map, look at where planes go and where you would need a car and leave WA to the next trip.
