At the register inside the bookstore, I see customers handing over their debit cards while the cashier seems very happy ripping people off. Why are these books so blatantly overpriced? Just look at any reputable website such as Amazon or eBay, and you will find that the very same books are sold at usually $50-100 off. However the bookstore still overprices because they know that there will be lazy people out there. These people don’t even take five minutes out of their time to search for cheaper books. They want the books instantly, so they buy the books the first day of class which costs them an extra $100-300.

There are many ways to save money on textbooks. First of all, before you even search for books, contact your professors to see if the book is required in the first place. For example, my computer science professor posted a book that was “required” during the summer before school started. On the first day, she said that you don’t need to buy the book. She posted the book on the book list because the college requires that professors have a book for their class. So, sometimes a required book is actually not required at all, but just something professors have to do. I urge you to email your professors before you buy your books, because you never know.

Ok, let’s say you contacted your professors and they said the books are required for class. The next thing you should do is ask them if you can buy an older edition of the book. Older editions are much cheaper because no one wants them anymore. This is another crucial step that can save you hundreds of dollars, so don’t be afraid to ask.

Alright, before you go and purchase your books (not from the bookstore, of course), ask your family and friends to see if they have the book you need. Maybe you can borrow them for the semester, and that will cost you absolutely nothing.

If that is not possible, the next step is to buy your books online. A quick 5 minute search on Amazon or eBay can save you a sizable amount of cash already. But why be content with just saving a small amount of cash? Shop around on other sites to see if there are cheaper books out there. And I guarantee you, a thorough search of about 1-2 hours can really save you a lot.

The best way to save up to 80% or more is to buy international editions if possible. Almost all of the time these international editions have the same exact material in them, even though the books may say that the US and international editions are different. One international edition book I bought cost $25. My friend rented the book for more money than that (around $50). These books are sold for about $20-50 instead of the bookstore’s price of about $200-300. The only downfall to the international edition is that their paperback and the pages may be of lower quality, but you shouldn’t be worried about that.

School’s out, and you have a bunch of textbooks that aren’t going to be used anymore. What should you do? If you bought your books from the bookstore (which you shouldn’t have done in the first place), do not sell them back to the bookstore. They will buy them at a much lower price than what you could actually sell them for! This means you will get ripped off twice (once for buying, once for selling to the bookstore)! Instead, sell them on Amazon or eBay. I prefer Amazon, because it seems that there are people who are willing to pay higher. Sell your used books at the same price you bought them for. You might be surprised if someone buys your book. If that doesn’t happen, then slowly reduce your price. And here’s the trick that will get people to buy your book: describe your book’s condition as honestly and as detailed as possible. You might think the opposite is true, but the more honest details you put, the more people will want to buy your book instead of the one that says “Used, but still in very good shape.”

Hopefully, this article can help you reduce your textbook costs. You may even find that you end up spending nothing for your books! And remember, never deal with the college bookstore, unless you like losing hard-earned cash.
