Contemporary audiences may currently associate the Green Lantern with hunky Ryan Reynolds and the Green Hornet with curly-topped Seth Rogan, but both of these superheroes have their origins in comic books and radio shows. So you don’t get them confused with each other, here’s a look at each that will not only offer up a little background, but ensure that you won’t confuse one with the other. (And yes, there is also a Green Arrow)

The Green Hornet

Who was that Masked Man? Well, as is the case with most superheroes, his story is not only of one man who avenges as The Green Hornet.

The Green Hornet actually predates The Green Lantern. The Green Hornet was created as a radio series in 1936 by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker, with assistance from radio director James Jewell. The Green Hornet ran with a companion series, its predecessor, “The Lone Ranger.” In fact, the man who spearheaded “The Lone Ranger” wanted a similar series, one that “show that a political system could be riddled with corruption and that one man could successfully combat this white-collar lawlessness,” Trendle is quoted as saying in John Dunning’s 1998 book On the Air: The Encyclopedia of Old-Time Radio. It was originally going to be called “The Hornet,” but the named already had been used and there were issues of rights. Believe it or not, before they settled on green, blue and pink were considered to precede Hornet.

The radio show was a big hit, and chronicled the adventures of a newspaper publisher, Britt Reid who turns into a masked, crime-fighter at night. The master villains in the radio serial were the criminal mastermind Mr. Big, Mr. X and the unscrupulous P.I. Oliver Perry

He is aided by his faithful valet, Kato, who starts out as Japanese, becomes Filipino of Japanese descent by 1939, but after the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, references to Kato being Japanese were dropped (ie. he went from being described as “Japanese valet” to “faithful valet.”

Although in June 1941 he was described as the “Filipino valet,” when the Green Hornet became the hero of 13 movie serials made by Universal in 1940, Kato then became Korean. Even though actor Gordon Jones (who was also Mike the Cop on the Abbott and Costello show) played the Green Hornet, original radio voice Al Hodge was the uncredited voice of the Hornet.

Keye Luke, who was the movie’s Charlie Chan “No. 1 Son,” but may be remembered as Master Po in the 1970′s “Kung Fu,” played the “Korean” Kato in the Universal movie serial. (Fun fact: Luke was the voice of “Brak” in “Space Ghost Coast to Coast,” as well as all of the villains on “Scooby Doo, Where Are You?”)

A revised cast was featured in Universal’s 1941 movie serial of 15 films (Luke revived his role as Kato).

Despite the fact that it aired for only one season- 1966 to 1967 – ABC’s “The Green Hornet” television series, and its 26 episodes are often referenced as “classic television,” and that is likely to be credited to TV’s Kato, the legendary martial artist, Bruce Lee (in Lee’s hometown of Hong Kong, the series was called “The Kato Show”). There was crossover with the campy “Batman” TV series, despite the fact “The Green Hornet” was played straight.

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Flight of the Bumblebee” was used in both the radio serial and TV series.

When he is not writing, Jopseph can often be found working in his gardens. He gets his gardening supplies and plants from Garden Harvest Supply. They have a large variety of vegetables such as pea plants and supplies such as plant supports.

where should I start in the green lantern series?

Okay so I am new to the comic book/ graphic novel scene and I saw on the Scream awards that Green Lantern won best comic book. So I’ve decided that I want to start reading that series. But starting form the beginning would be ridiculous because Green Lantern has been around since the 50′s! So does anyone have any suggestions as to where I should start reading? Like a certain volume or something?

You can start with Green Lantern: Rebirth. That would get you in on the ground floor of when the original Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, was brought back. You can follow that up with Green Lantern (vol. 4) issue #1.
