What does it mean for resources to be mobile?
In my microeconomics class, we had this question:
Last summer, Casey took fresh vegetables to sell at the Farmer’s Market, but this year, Casey did not plant any vegetables and went to work at the local bank. It was easy for Casey to leave the vegetable growing business because
A. the productive resources Casey used were mobile.
B. vegetable growing is a seasonal occupation.
C. demand for vegetables is price inelastic.
D. inputs to vegetable production are specialized.
The answer was A, my question is what does it mean for resources to be mobile and in the example above how are vegetables a “mobile resource?” Thanks in advance
The mobile resource was Casey himself. Instead of working his garden and selling at the Farmer’s Market.he spent the time at the local bank.
Admittedly, the question is terrible. Casey also used his land to grow vegetables and land is not a mobile resource so it is not true that both of “the productive resources Casey used were mobile.”
Also, had Casey had a real truck farm, with a tractor, irrigation equipment, perhaps a greenhouse, etc. then even more of the resources he used would not have been mobile.
But any way you look at it, the vegetables are not a resource, mobile or otherwise; they were a product.
