Comic book heros & movies ones have fought crime for years, are they really needed today?

Let’s face it they have fought crime for years, yet the crime rate is increasing. The criminals know about the super heros yet they continue to commit crimes. Are the super heros really doing their job properly? The crime rate should be decreasing to the point where the super heros do battle with each other for the fun of it!!

Good, smart question, and we’re getting some very smart answers from it.

First off, it is poor logic to assume that the hero creates the villian, or vice versa. It SEEMS like that because 99% of stories focus on the heroes origin before anything else. Let’s face it, most people buy comic books not for the story itself as much as for a glorified main character.

A good example in something less comic-book like is Indiana Jones. You don’t see the movie in order to relate to an interesting story – that’s more for movies like Jaws, Private Ryan, or Shawshank Redemption. You watch it just because you know whatever Indy will be doing, it’s going to be cool. Because he is cool. Now in comic books, what makes the character cool is his powers first and foremost.

So to make those powers have a purpose in a story, other than lifting a car just for the sake of clearing street traffic, they have to have a threat. And if the fictitious city/place has many threats, then the superhero can do many things. And that is what we want to read about, an active superhero.

So, my point is that since comics are a form of entertainment that is indefinite, the writers know the threats also have to be indefinte, so that the heroes have something to do. It’s like asking if a movie about pirates is pointless, if they always have to do more pirating.

Another way of looking at it is the military. There will always be wars. There will always be a need to defend ourselves. Just because one war doesn’t solve anything, or just because we (at a point in time) aren’t hated enough to be attacked… that doesn’t mean we don’t need the military. We can look at superbeings as just another extention of that.

This hapless comedy may actually work a lot better on video than it did in theaters. A parody of contemporary mob movies (with a few sidebars skewering such hits as Forrest Gump and The English Patient), Mafia! most closely resembles the first two Godfather films in its generational saga of a gangster family. Lloyd Bridges plays Don Cortino, a native Sicilian who presides over a crime syndicate…

The Dark Knight arrives with tremendous hype (best superhero movie ever? posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger?), and incredibly, it lives up to all of it.
